Every hurricane season, the same question comes up in Houston neighborhoods: what do I do about those pine trees in my yard?

On our street, we saw 15 pine trees taken down after Hurricane Beryl. The neighbors, and our founder included, after going through countless hurricanes over the years, had decided it just wasn’t worth the risk to their homes anymore. 

So is cutting it down the right move? The honest answer is: it depends — on the tree, the location, your risk tolerance, and what you stand to lose either way. Here’s both sides of the equation, laid out as clearly as we can manage.


Why pine trees concern homeowners more than other species

Not all trees carry the same risk in high winds, and pines have some specific characteristics worth understanding.

Large pines are generally classified as having medium to poor wind resistance. While some species like longleaf and slash pine perform better than others, when pines become large and are located close to homes or other structures, the potential for damage if they fall is significant.

The reason comes down to structure. Pines tend to grow tall with a high center of gravity and relatively shallow root systems compared to hardwoods like live oak. In saturated soil — which is common during a hurricane’s rain bands — that root system has even less to hold onto. Pine species show increased treefall susceptibility in wetter soils. A storm that might leave a well-rooted hardwood standing can uproot a large pine that’s been sitting in waterlogged ground for two days.

In 2024, 61 of 65 wind-related deaths from Hurricane Helene were caused by falling trees, according to the National Hurricane Center. That’s not a number designed to frighten — it’s context for why this question deserves a genuine answer rather than a dismissal.

The risk isn’t just from the tree falling whole. Large pines also shed heavy branches in tropical-force winds, and a branch the diameter of your forearm falling from 60 feet carries enough force to punch through a roof deck. The damage doesn’t require a catastrophic failure — it just requires a storm.


The real cost of losing your shade trees

Here’s the part of the conversation that often gets skipped: those trees are doing real work for your home, and removing them has a cost that shows up on your electricity bill every summer.

Well-placed trees can reduce air-conditioning costs by up to 35 percent, and studies have shown that a yard with 50 percent shade can save an average of $30 a month in summer over treeless yards. In Houston, where AC runs hard from May through October, that adds up to real money year over year.

Carefully positioned trees can reduce a household’s energy consumption for heating and cooling by up to 25 percent, and the U.S. Department of Energy projects that the proper placement of just three trees can save an average household between $100 and $250 in energy costs annually.

For a Houston home where summer electricity bills regularly run $200–$400 a month, mature pine trees providing shade to the south and west sides of the house could be meaningfully reducing what you’re paying CenterPoint every month. Remove them, and that savings disappears — permanently, until replacement trees reach maturity, which takes decades.

There’s also the broader value: property aesthetics, noise reduction, air quality, privacy screening. Mature trees take 20 to 40 years to grow. You can’t replace what you cut down on any reasonable timeline.


The case for removal — when the math gets uncomfortable

Here’s where we have to be honest about what a large pine tree falling on a home actually means.

A full-grown pine in the Houston area can stand 60 to 80 feet tall and weigh several tons. If it falls on your house during a hurricane, you’re not looking at a roofing repair. You’re looking at potential structural collapse, significant interior damage from water exposure, displacement while repairs happen, and an insurance claim process that can stretch for months. If the tree falls on the occupied portion of the home while your family is sheltering in place — which is exactly when a hurricane arrives — the consequences extend well beyond property damage.

Trees within striking distance of a home can cause significant damage during a hurricane — and even trees with healthy root systems and deep taproots can fail under hurricane conditions. Healthy doesn’t mean safe in a major storm. It just means the odds are somewhat better.

The proximity question matters enormously. A pine tree standing 100 feet from your home in an open yard is a very different conversation from a pine tree standing 30 feet from your bedroom with a lean toward the house. A certified arborist can evaluate the specific fall radius, the health of the root system, signs of internal decay that aren’t visible from the outside, and whether the tree has structural characteristics that increase its failure risk. That assessment is worth getting before making a decision either way.

For trees at high risk of failure — especially over-mature specimens of species with poor hurricane survival rates located near homes — removal is a legitimate recommendation. For borderline cases, consulting a certified arborist is the right call.


The middle path: management over removal

Removal isn’t the only option, and it’s worth knowing that before you make an irreversible call.

Few property owners recognize that trees can be managed to reduce risk. Proper pruning, crown reduction, and structural assessment are all tools that can meaningfully lower the hazard a tree presents without eliminating it entirely. Crown thinning reduces wind resistance by allowing air to move through the canopy rather than push against it as a solid mass. Removing co-dominant leaders — competing main stems — can reduce the likelihood of splitting in high winds. Dead or hanging branches can be cleared before a storm season rather than leaving them to become projectiles.

After Hurricane Andrew, trees that had been properly pruned showed better survival rates than unpruned ones of the same species. Professional management isn’t a guarantee — nothing is, in a major hurricane — but it meaningfully shifts the odds.

If you have pine trees close to your home, having them evaluated by a certified arborist before hurricane season is a more informed starting point than either ignoring them or removing them outright.


So — should you cut them down?

We’re not going to make that call for you, and we don’t think anyone should without knowing your specific trees, your specific home, and your specific situation.

What we can say is that both sides of this decision are real. The electricity savings from mature shade trees are real and measurable. The risk of a large pine failing onto your home in a major hurricane is also real — not hypothetical, not overblown. The question of which risk you’re more willing to carry is genuinely yours to answer.

What we’d suggest: get a professional tree assessment before hurricane season. Know what you’re actually working with — the health of the root system, signs of decay, the fall radius relative to your structure. Make the decision from that information rather than from fear alone or from optimism alone.
